Tanner Beebe reminds me of my 12-year old self. He’s just too talented and too good to play evenly with his peers. Much like young Mr. Beebe, I was never allowed to pitch in Massachusetts Little League baseball. In my case it was because I lived in Virginia when I was 12 but Tanner is being picked on for being, in his own words, “too good.” As first reported by MassLive and then picked up by Yahoo!, the kid is being offered his own Sophie’s Choice. He can stay on a team managed by his dad in the “Minors” level of Little League but not pitch, or he can move up to the “Majors” level and get back on the mound. Here I will ask you to use your considerable imagination, gentle reader, for I can not find the perfect YouTube clip to paste here. Were I but only able to find it, this is where you would see a short clip from the movie Shogun Assassin with the speech made famous by GZA’s Liquid Swordz album: “Choose the sword and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death…” Join me now in imagining [...]

It is amazing how little Phil Jackson revealed throughout his twenty years of coaching. Once in awhile, there would be a snippet here and there in the media of the legendary coach trying to antagonize the refs, or prod one of his star players, but rarely did he admit to the difficulties of all the personalities he had to deal with, especially Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. But, with a book to sell, Eleven Rings, Jackson has opened up and been willing to answer some of those questions, including that Kobe vs Shaq dynamic. During a promotional appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Phil Jackson gave explanation to just how difficult it was. Via the Dish: “It was probably one of the hardest challenges I had in coaching over all those years, 20 years that I coached because there was always this little tension about ‘it’s my team, it’s my team, I want to play ball my style; I want to get the ball inside, no I want to do stuff outside, you know that kind of thing,” he said. Jackson reportedly writes in the book that he generally let the feud burn itself out, and rarely got [...]

As a sports fan, and a self-avowed geek, I’m kind of obligated to like Daryl Morey. The man brought Moneyball to the NBA, and has produced some amazingly mediocre results with the Rockets that would make Billy Beane proud. But on top of that, he’s a pretty good interview. He’s funny, intelligent, and never afraid to answer a question honestly (unless he’s giving away team secrets). And best of all, he’s relatively social media savvy. Morey’s Twitter account, although usually sparsely populated, can sometimes give us a little insight into the mind of an NBA GM. Such as today, when Morey (or whoever was running his account for the day) decided to start posting up his favorite Pre-Draft Interview moments with potential picks. There are some real gems out there, and probably a lot more that Morey couldn’t post. Have a look at the ones he was able to share with us: Best draft interview answers ever part 1: player, can you pass a drug test? [grabs table] TODAY?!? — Daryl Morey (@dmorey) May 22, 2013 More best answers: “anyone who is projected ahead of U that U think U R better than?” ALL OF THEM “Have you ever [...]

Apparently, Hakeem Nicks doesn’t understand that leaders lead. The New York Giants fifth-year wide receiver who is entering into the final year of his rookie contract, claims that he is ready to be a leader. That’s what he told reporters just last night in Manhattan: Via NYDN: Younger wideouts come up to him and ask him questions about “their routes, stuff about the offense, and stuff like that,” he says. And then they hang on his words. “A lot more guys come up to me for questions,” Nicks said at a United Way event in Manhattan Tuesday. “I’ve always been willing to take the role of leader.” “In the wide receiving room, I’ve been around the longest,” he said. “I’ve just got to take it stride for stride.” Apparently, his stride couldn’t get him across the Hudson today to the Timex Performance Center, the practice facility for the Giants. It was the first day of OTAs, and Nicks was nowhere to be seen, and head coach Tom Coughlin was not amused: “I don’t know,” Coughlin said after the session. “He should be here.” Coughlin added that Nicks would have likely worked with some “limitations” to protect the knee he injured [...]

Kevin Durant got a huge tattoo on his back. It is a work of beauty. It took many visits to the tattoo parlor chair to be completed, and it is complete with an angel holding a basketball, Jesus, and scripture. The texture used is simply amazing and it really is unbelievable artwork. But there is a problem. See if you can spot it. Via @sniperjones Still scratching your head? It is a little tough to notice, but you need to read the visible words of the scripture he has on his back. It is taken from James 1:2-4. Here is how it reads in the Message, the version that Durant appears to have used: Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors.
This might be the most shocking development of the NBA season. Donald Sterling made a decision to actually keep a high-priced free agent as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers. According to T.J. Simers at the LA Times, Sterling was reluctant to fire head coach Vinny Del Negro, but knew that it was something he had to do in order to keep point guard Chris Paul as apart of the organization: “The coach is a wonderful man, and I’m sad about the whole thing,” Sterling said. “Was this done,” I asked, “just to hang on to Chris Paul?” “I always want to be honest and not say anything that is not true,” Sterling said. “So I’d rather not say anything. But you know, the coach did a really good job. I think he did. And I liked working with him. There are just factors that make life very complicated and very challenging.” While not a direct answer to Simers’ question, he pretty much admitted that the reason was to keep CP3 around as he heads into free agency this summer. Sterling has to re-sign him. The Clippers, though suffering a difficult playoff defeat, just had their greatest season ever [...]
