Florida recruit declares for NBA draft, before enrolling

20120814-220724.jpgChris Walker fully intends to enter the NBA draft after one year with the Florida Gators, and he made that very apparent to the Panama City News-Herald. It has never really been a secret. Guys like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving aren’t sticking around for more than a year. In fact, if the NBA would just rid the world of their stupid age limit we wouldn’t have to see such shenanigans at the college level.

Walker told the paper:

“Coach (Billy Donovan) said where my skill level is, if that’s what I want I should go for it,” said Walker, who has committed to the Gators’ 2013 recruiting class. “What I keep hearing is that I’m a potential lottery pick. But I’m not satisfied.”

The kid is a stud recruit, who stands 6’9″ entering his senior season of high school. Many project him to be a versatile power forward at the next level.

Or he could declare for the scrabble draft right now.

So, a junior in high school announced his intentions of declaring for the NBA Draft in 2 years, following the successful completion of a senior year in HS and a freshman year in college. And this is news because?

The NBA Owners and Players both want to keep the age limit on the draft. For the owners, it’s a huge benefit to make kids play at least one year against real competition instead of drafting a guy #1 because he looked good against other HS kids and maybe on the AAU circuit.

The players still back the age limit because it helps veterans stay in the league and prevents teams from filling up cap space with unproven kids who may never pan out.

Seems that UK isn’t the only school playing the one & done game. I can’t believe Donovan would entertain such nonsense.

I think that if a high school basket ball player is picked by a college on a schlorship for 4 years than they should have to play for 4 yeaars, and the pro teams should back the college.

I have a problem with a team taking a time out and let me explane. Say team 1 takes a timeout and team 1 goes to there end of the floor. Then you have team 2 goes to there end of there court. the time out was called by team 1 and team 2 shouldnt be allowed to go to there end because its not there time out. I dont care if team 2 sends smoke signals or holler plays to there but no time out was called for team 2

I have no problem whatsoever with the One & Done. However, if a coach is going to recruit one and dones (as most would if they could) don’t be hypocritical about it. That’s what I admire about Calipari, he’s not afraid to say what he thinks.

  • Mitch Watson

On one hand it’s hard to blame Calipari for playing the system the way he does for personal gain…on the other hand…the one with a conscience , I very much blame him for what has to be viewed as exploitation since the kids are basically licensed to pretend college life and completely dishonor their signed agreement to accept a scholarship for their services…how can this be viewed as anything other than a breached agreement with the university ? We are teaching kids that it’s fine to break their word if something better comes along…and we wonder why our nation is racing straight to hell…really???
