Star high school pitcher found dead

Extremely sad news out of Tennessee, as a star high school pitcher that was headed to Vanderbilt on scholarship was found dead on the side of the road from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot.

“We found the body of Stephen Gant about 30 feet from the roadway with a gunshot wound,” Weems said. “We do believe at this time that it was self-inflicted; however, we will continue to investigate to look at other possibilities to make sure it was suicide.”

Stephen Gant, a senior at Riverside High School, had signed to play with Vanderbilt next season and was thought to be a possible first round draft choice in the MLB draft this June. He has been named the Jackson Sun’s Player of the Year 3 straight seasons.

“This stops you right in your tracks,” VU coach Tim Corbin said in a release from the university’s athletics department. “These are life occurrences that can’t be explained … there are no ‘do-overs.’

“We are all deeply saddened for Gloria, Tony, his brothers and sister as well as the many friends that Stephen had. All we can do is be supportive for the family and be there for them.”

Just crushing news for his family. So many questions will surround what was wrong and what would lead him to this decision if it was in fact a suicide, but they are questions that will never be answered.

    Sad, really sad.

Terrible for his parents and family. If he did take his life, it’s sad he didn’t get help.
