2012 TVF Bracket Tournament: Cartoonology

March 12, 2012
By

We welcome you all back for the 4th Annual TVF Bracket Tournament. This year the decision was not easy. There was debate between all writer as to what we should all choose. We debated what was more more significant for all those that hang out at this site. We wanted to reach to all ages and all sexes. That is when we decided (and when I say we, I mean me) that this years topic for voting would be cartoon characters.

This in itself became a debate. We raged back and forth as to what qualified as a cartoon. Do superhero’s count? Is claymation a cartoon? Are evening sitcoms really in the same category? We almost went with just cartoons, but since we just did sitcoms a couple years ago, we figured that the Simpsons themselves were already heavily featured. Once we narrowed it down to all animated characters as being available for the tournament, the selection committee got together and hammered a list out. Once the original list was made, Big D and myself made some changes and began the ranking process.

For those wanting to know why 2 characters are listed at times, it is because one character couldn’t exist without the other. Rocky doesn’t matter without Bullwinkle, and Davey needs his Goliath. Scooby and Shaggy were iconic on their own accord. If I say Shaggy, your first thought is a tall, gangly, screechy voice cartoon character, not a terrible pop music singer. Where as Rocky is said, one thinks of a boxer, real or fake.

We know that there are going to be issues with entrants and seeding, and that is half the fun of this. So, look at the bracket and let us know what you think. Click on the bracket to enlarge and zoom. You can also click on the regional links below the full bracket

BATMAN A TWO SEED!!?!?! He’s a comic book/movie guy who happened to have a cartoon.

    Lame.

  2. knightwhosaysni on March 12, 2012 at 10:24 am

    Inspector Gadget is criminally underseeded.

  3. Watsonian on March 12, 2012 at 10:25 am

    What trey said.

  4. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:26 am

Holy shit this seeding is garbage. Spongebob gets a 3 seed? WTF?? Wolverine is a 13 seed?

  5. knightwhosaysni on March 12, 2012 at 10:26 am

Marvin the Martian will beat Spong Bob. book it.

  6. Watsonian on March 12, 2012 at 10:27 am

    Also, what KWSN said.

  7. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:28 am

Shaggy on the 5 line is just a slap in the face.

    /ZOINKS!!

  8. Mark Mizerle06 on March 12, 2012 at 10:29 am

    Do superhero’s count?

    no.

  9. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:30 am

Because we’re always trapped in the now, I suspect Serling Archer will take out He Man when in fact that would be a crime against humanity.

Oh…and HOW THE FUCK IS G.I. JOE NOT IN THE FIELD???

  10. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:32 am

Superman, The Joker and Batman have no place in this. Neither does Wolverine, really. If you’re going to have Optimus Prime, you have to have Megatron. The committee deserves a shot to the nuts after this abortion.

  11. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:35 am

Holy fucking shit. Yosemite Sam was left out, too? So was Wile E. Coyote? What the hell is going on here?

  12. Trey on March 12, 2012 at 10:36 am

Batman. Worst two seed since the committee admittedly & accidentally put Tennessee in that spot in 2006.

  13. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:37 am

Ok…I think my search function is not working. I see Megatron and Cobra Commander, so that’s nice. How Phineas and Ferb (??) made this list is a real god damn mystery though.

  14. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 10:38 am

Batman TAS is one of the best cartoons ever written.

GI Joe? Which one? Duke? Because when I say “Duke” you think of a basketball school. When i say Cobra Commander, ya think of the show

  15. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:40 am

GI Joe? Which one? Duke? Because when I say “Duke” you think of a basketball school. When i say Cobra Commander, ya think of the show

I suppose I can handle that, but how the fuck does Phineas and Ferb, Bender, Daria/Grape Ape, The Joker, Batman, Superman, Wolverine Lion-O, Doug Funny and Hank Hill make it over Hall of Famers Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner and Yosemite Sam?

    EGREGIOUS!!!

  16. Trey on March 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

Dude. Batman cartoon might have been well written but no one considers Batman a top 8 cartoon character. Not will they ever. Not should they ever. He deserves to be in the field, bu much lower 5-6 seed

  17. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:43 am

Also, I guess you wanted to have more cartoons represented (not sure why) but Bart Simpson has to be involved. This would be like having sit com characters and only including Jerry Seinfeld and not Kramer, too.

  18. Johnny on March 12, 2012 at 10:47 am

    Bart’s a two seed…

  19. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:49 am

    Bart’s a two seed…

I think I would agree. I actually think I’d have Bart as a 2 seed or even a 1 seed while I would put Homer on the 3 line with him being a favorite to take the title.

  20. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 10:50 am

Bart is an afterthought after season 3.

  21. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:50 am

Can we all agree that Sponge Bob being on the 3 line is borderline criminal?

  22. Mark Mizerle06 on March 12, 2012 at 10:52 am

parrish – this year’s selection committee created nothing short of an abomination.

  23. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 10:53 am

really? Everyone knows who Spongebob is. EVERYONE.

  24. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:54 am

This site has Bart No. 4 all time with Homer No. 2. I think calling Bart an afterthought is a bit much, personally.

  25. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:55 am

really? Everyone knows who Spongebob is. EVERYONE.

WHo fucking cares. Everyone knows who Nickelback is. Doesn’t make them a 3-seed in modern bands bracket. Sponge Bob is a 7-seed, tops.

  26. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 10:56 am

parrish – this year’s selection committee created nothing short of an abomination.

    Abomination didn’t make the list.

  27. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:56 am

Popeye on the 6-line is another one that jumps off of the page. Dude should be on the 3-line at worst.

  28. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 10:57 am

WHo fucking cares. Everyone knows who Nickelback is. Doesn’t make them a 3-seed in modern bands bracket. Sponge Bob is a 7-seed, tops.

general popularity and pop-culture impact count more for this. Spongebob’s is huge.

  29. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 10:59 am

No Mumm-Ra? I mean, did we really need Tennessee Tuxedo?

  30. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:00 am

general popularity and pop-culture impact count more for this.

You mean to tell me Popeye had less of an impact on pop culture than Sponge Bob? Don’t get trapped by the now, my man. You might as well call this a culture bracket like Jace if you want to judge what’s good by what moves the needle.

  31. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 11:01 am

Don’t get trapped by the now, my man.

yes. spongebob movie made ridiculous amount of money and merchandise sales are threw the roof. i win again. keep going.

  32. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:06 am

yes. spongebob movie made ridiculous amount of money and merchandise sales are threw the roof. i win again. keep going.

You win by saying Spongebob is more culturally important than Popeye? Are you high? I guess because your kids watch that abortion of a show it means more, but Popeye is a Hall of Fame character.

    You lose…again

  33. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:17 am

Also, how did you forget about Wile E. Coyote/Road Runner and Yosemite Sam? I mean, Tennessee Tuxedo made the list for crying out loud. You mean to tell me Underdog is more culturally relevant compared with Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner. I mean, I’m pretty sure I just saw a commercial with those two in it for some insurance company, so that has to knock their Q rating up a bit, no?

  34. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 11:18 am

Tennessee Tuxedo had a terrible RPI rating but got hot and won their conference tourney

  35. Johnny on March 12, 2012 at 11:21 am

Look again Parrish, the Coyote is seeded…

  36. Knightro on March 12, 2012 at 11:25 am

    * shakes head *

  37. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:29 am

Look again Parrish, the Coyote is seeded…

Then he must have changed it now, because I have the original one still up and he’s not in there. Since we’re apparently changing this on the fly, how about adding Yosemite Sam, too?

  38. patphish on March 12, 2012 at 11:31 am

    threw the roof.

    Was it heavy?

  39. Johnny on March 12, 2012 at 11:34 am

Then he must have changed it now, because I have the original one still up and he’s not in there. Since we’re apparently changing this on the fly, how about adding Yosemite Sam, too?

He was in Trey’s post this morning

  40. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:34 am

Holy hell. It was just brought to my attention that Bibleman is in fact a cartoon character. How Kippe left this legitimate badass off of the list is worthy of a discussion.

  41. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:35 am

He was in Trey’s post this morning

That was just Trey trying to predict what would happen, and of course any sane, rational prediction would have the Coyote in it. How the committee screwed this up will be a debate for years to come.

  42. Johnny on March 12, 2012 at 11:35 am

But this is apparently different than what trey posted

  43. Knightro on March 12, 2012 at 11:39 am

parrish – I’m not seeing coyote either. Nor credibility.

    Johnny Quest? Nope.
    Hong Kong Phooey? Nope.
    The Oblongs? Nope.
    Josie & The Pussycats? Nope.
    Jabberjaw? Nope.

    Nope. Nope. Nope.

  44. Trey on March 12, 2012 at 11:40 am

I had Jabberjaw in mine. Nuk. Nuk. Nuk.

  45. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 11:44 am

parrish – I’m not seeing coyote either. Nor credibility.

Tennessee Tuxedo clearly greased some palms up in this bitch. No other explanation.

  46. marcomarco on March 12, 2012 at 11:57 am

    He-man without Skeletor?

    /joins in the whining

  47. Knightro on March 12, 2012 at 11:57 am

yes. spongebob movie made ridiculous amount of money and merchandise sales are threw the roof. i win again. keep going.

Then where the f**k is Garfield?

  48. ParrishWalton on March 12, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Then where the f**k is Garfield?

He’s a 4-seed because he didn’t earn enough money at the box office.

    /Kippe’d

    • Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Garfield’s success was more due to the comic strip than the actual animated version.

  49. cabbage on March 12, 2012 at 12:43 pm

Where the hell is Go Mifune? aka SPEED RACER

  50. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Where the hell is Go Mifune? aka SPEED RACER

he’s a 6 seed in the Disney Region

  51. rekcalsa on March 12, 2012 at 3:10 pm

This site has Bart No. 4 all time with Homer No. 2. I think calling Bart an afterthought is a bit much, personally.

Bart’s the one that sold the video games that I loved playing.

I’m wondering where Tiny Toons and/or Animaniacs are…they could sub in at a couple spots.

  52. Vez on March 12, 2012 at 3:53 pm

ren/stimpy? adventure time? teen titans!!!? samurai fucking jack?

ask for help from us multiple kid folks next year

  53. Groin on March 12, 2012 at 3:53 pm

Had I taken the time to actually read this post, I’m sure I would have concluded that this list is complete shit.

Spent last night watching Yosemite Sam and Tom and Jerry with my 5 year old daughter. She belly laughed about 10 times. Damn near made the ol’ man cry. I felt the need to say, “you know we can’t really hit people with shovels, right?” She rolled her eyes at me and said, “I know, DAD.”

  54. Vez on March 12, 2012 at 3:54 pm

    clutch cargo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Vez on March 12, 2012 at 3:55 pm

groin, every parent should try to get their kids to like the toons we liked. got kids onto little rascals and old popeye. waiting awhile for 3 stooges…they bash each other enough as it is

  56. Trey on March 12, 2012 at 3:59 pm

Garfield’s success was more due to the comic strip than the actual animated version.

    LIKE BATMAN!??!?!?!?

  57. Groin on March 12, 2012 at 4:00 pm

Couldn’t agree more, Vez. I was amazed at how these cartoons from the 1940′s and 50′s made her laugh.

Pissed me off that I couldn’t find my all time favorite cartoon episode on Youtube. The one where Bugs Bunny visit’s Yosemite Sam’s castle and deducts money from Sam’s winnings each time he gets mad.

  58. Groin on March 12, 2012 at 4:06 pm

Space Ghost vs Foghorn Leghorne in round one is completely asinine. That could easily be a final four matchup.

  59. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 4:08 pm

    LIKE BATMAN!??!?!?!?

well, Batman TAS was insanely popular. Garfield and Friends didn’t have the clout. Batman is consistently ranked as 1 of the best cartoons of all-time. Entertainment Weekly, IGN, whatever. Every time someone else does a Batman cartoon, it is compared to that one. Kevin Konroy mastered a Bruce Wayne/Batman voice difference

  60. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 4:11 pm

i meant consistently ranked near the top. sorry.

  61. Groin on March 12, 2012 at 4:11 pm

If my daughters did the brackets, Calliou would be the overall 1 seed. God I hate that little bald Canadian kid!

  62. Oskie on March 12, 2012 at 4:14 pm

My son would have had Thomas at a 1 seed

  63. Vez on March 12, 2012 at 5:21 pm

    calliou…the 64k question…why is a 4yo bald?
