Being unable to sign your franchise QB would seem like a big deal, but the New Orleans Saints do have other concerns right now. However, Drew Brees is none to pleased with the franchise tag being placed on him, and has absolutely no plans on signing off on it.
A report from Larry Holder of CBS Sports via WIST-AM in New Orleans say that “Brees is livid” about the organization placing the franchise tag on him and not working out a new deal. The radio station is sourcing individuals in Brees’ inner circle that the All-Pro will not sign the franchise tag deal. What that means is that Brees will holdout of camp if a deal on a new contract is not reached by July 15th.
Reports out of New Orleans are that Brees and the Saints were about $5 million per year apart prior to the team placing the tag on him. Couple this with GM Mickey Loomis calling Brees only ‘very good’. Loomis has since said that he believes that Brees is, in fact, a great player.
With all the chaos going on in NOLA, the Saints cannot afford to let Brees walkaway. All the power would seem to be with Brees at this time. The team is about to possibly lose their coach for multiple games this season, and it is thought that draft picks will also be part of punishments from Roger Goodell’s office. This really isn’t the time for the Saints to mess around. Drew Brees has a lot left in the tank and is still the franchise. This is when owner Tom Benson needs to just open up the checkbook and say “how much?”
