The Morning After: September 15, 2011

September 15, 2011
By

As the MLB regular season winds down, only a couple of things remain undecided as far as the playoffs are concerned.  The most compelling story is the little baseball team that could, the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Red Sox have a 4 game lead on them in the wild card standings, and the magic number to clinch is 11.  No offense to Big D, but I would absolutely love it if Tampa was able to track down the mighty Boston Moneybags and earn a playoff spot.  That would be another blow to the already dead and decaying argument that baseball is in need of a salary cap to ensure parity.  Building a successful baseball organization has a lot more to do with being smart than spending large amounts of money.  Just ask the nearest Cubs and Mets fans you can find.  So here’s to the little team that could, and to a strong finish.  Links and such after the jump.

Tougher than Fulmer or Kiffin, but I’ve been able to find some there.

I don’t hate SABR. I just hate when people use it as the end all/be all.

That read like a professional Bleacher Report article. Both topics are incredibly DUH.

    Anaheim? Chicago White Sox?

The USA beat Russia in the Rugby World Cup (is Russia good?)

    yeah it’s not happening

No and I had the game DVR’ed and now you ruined it.
Actually there are 5 teams so 4 games each in pool play. The USA is not going to beat Australia. Actually they will lose by 30-40 at least. They got beat by Ireland and really had no chance of beating them. There is a real outside shot they beat Italy but the game they were trying to win was this one against Russia. They play rugby in Russia about as much as they do here.

As a Yankee fan who wants to keep seeing his team win, I whole heartedly agree.

Small market teams will win on occasion and big spending big market teams like the Mets and Dodgers can be mismanaged into being bad teams but in general, it is a huge advantage to be able to go out and buy whatever free agents you want.

I’m sorry Dan, I though it was long over.

cannot believe fielder is talking about this as the playoffs come up. everyone may have known, but him saying it again means a new round of media wanking about it

    that’s not a leader

interesting music, too falsetto-y and B96-ish for me

A Fudgesicle is a frozen, ice cream-like snack.

I like that Yahoo News felt the need to define what a Fudgesicle is.

i would rather not click that and just wonder if the man used the fudgesicle to wake Cage or if it was just describing the man

    Tampa Sked:

    4 @ Bos
    4 @ NY
    3 vs Tor
    3 vs NY

    Boston Sked:

    4 vs TB
    4 vs Bal
    3 @ NY
    3 @ Bal

    It could still happen.

  16. Johnny on September 15, 2011 at 10:37 am

If Boston plays 500 ball Tampa has to go 11-3. There is no margin for error. It’s not going to happen

That song sucked, but the video was awesome.
