The last two weeks, I’ve returned to tournament poker at Foxwoods with a $200 Wednesday Night bounty tourney. $200 entry – $25 to the house, $125 to the final prize pool, and a $50 bounty on each player’s head. I’ve played bounty tourneys plenty of times before, but before last week’s tournament I had never collected a single bounty. I’d made deep runs, cashed a couple times, but never knocked anybody out. That’s pretty hard to do. Last Wednesday I collected one bounty off a player before getting bounced myself and playing cash games for ten hours.
This past Wednesday, I entered the tournament again, and made a deep run with a few knockouts. I ended up finishing 7th out of 100, scratching out a little profit. Unfortunately, I ran up against a guy who had just been running all kinds of hot and hitting every hand possible. He had collected 14 bounties (yes, that’s $700 before making the final table), and I had him All-In and dead to a flush draw. Needless to say he hit on the river to cripple me, and survived long enough to knock out two more players on a one-outter (QQ v. KK v. JJ – he rivered the last Q in the deck), collecting two more bounties and stacking up over 800,000 of the 1.5M chips in the entire tournament. I busted out 7th to a different player one hand later, collected my cash and headed for the exits. I can only assume he won the $3,500 first place money… along with a few more bounties.
No great loss – the cash paid for car repairs I had to have done earlier in the day, plus covered a short weekend trip I’ll be taking on Labor Day. Fine by me. Onto the links.

If you didn’t see the video of the shot that Rory McIlroy hit to cause this wrist injury, here it is. It’s brutal, but more importantly it was a stupid shot to attempt. Kid might be near the top of the leaderboard instead of T24 and seven shots back if he’d just played that one shot smart and taken his medicine with a lateral pitchout. David Feherty’s commentary of “You have to think about how long you’d like to play golf for” is prescient. (Yahoo)
And… Tiger Woods finished Day 1 of the PGA Championship in a tie with John Daly, one shot up on Darren Clarke, two shots ahead of Rocco Mediate, and eight shots ahead of Spencer’s new binkie Ryo Ishikawa… in 130th place, a mere fourteen strokes off the lead. (FoxSports)
Why did I not pay attention in Spanish class?!? I took eight years of it – I should probably know more than “Me llamo D” (Deadspin)
For all the Brit’s talk of hating American Baseball, they sure do like using bats to riot. (Slate)
Speaking of getting paid… looks like Chris Johnson didn’t waste a year of free agency by holding out. My fantasy team approves. (Yahoo)
I’d say this was photoshopped, but if it was then somebody did a shitty job of taking out Shaq’s quickly emerging Mickeltits. (TheHoopDoctors)
I’ve never been to LA outside of a stopover at LAX on my first trip to Vegas (poor planning on my part, but cheaper flights). This video is seriously cool though – I love time lapse shots. (Gizmodo)
Not like any of us here need any more examples of stupid government waste, but… Johnny, is this one on you? (FoxNews)
And… the roller coaster continues. The gains and losses on Wall Street are starting to look like gambling money lines – -600, +520, -415, +485… (CNN)
With the 10th anniversary of 9/11 coming up in a month, an NYC artist is preparing an installation piece in the city for use with cell phones. The “Augmented Reality” program for mobile devices allows users to take a live image and overlay an image of something completely different – the artist’s idea here is to allow users to hold up an iPhone or such to the current NYC skyline and see old images of the Twin Towers on top of it. So the question has become… is this in poor taste? (KickStarter)
I don’t know how I feel about this. I mean, I suppose it’s good that there could be new treatments for disease, but then again… It’s not like the world is underpopulated. (MIT)
And finally, to really kick off your Friday… some dudes crashing and burning off of skateboards, as well as some pretty awesome tricks… IN SLOW MOTION! (AsylumUK)
