The Spartacast – Episode 18: Let's all anger Big D!

Welcome back to yet another action packed 80 minutes of the Spartacast!  This week it’s Sparty, Lefty & Big D bringing you opinions and chatter on the first two weeks of the NFL season, the first three weeks of the college football season, and the final month of the baseball season.  Not to mention Heisman Trophy talk and preparation for the 2011 NFL draft – hey, it’s never too early.  So download it to your hard drive, grab it from iTunes for your commute or lunch break, or just click on the widget below and kill an hour and a half at your desk… here we go!

00:00 – After some lead-in music off of Linkin Park’s newest album, it’s straight into the chatter.  We are so eager to record tonight, we don’t even have an intro!  Just straight into the sports talk, starting with Michael Vick and his move into the starting role.

03:00 – That didn’t take long… we’re already ripping on ESPN Personalities.  First Mort, then Gammons.  Then Mort again.

06:00 – Aww… it’s so cute to see a New Yorker having Championship Envy…

08:30 – Cabbage, Knightro, CycleDan, Pat… you might want to skip over this part here when I start a sentence by saying “Well in fairness, I was only born in ’81…”

09:40 – It takes almost ten minutes of sports conversation to realize that… yeah, we’ve probably already “started” the podcast.  Not sure if that initial ten minutes counts as a “Tangent” or not, especially since Trey isn’t on tonight…

11:30 – Here’s where I piss off Philadelphia.  A Boston fan saying Philly fans are insufferable… Hello pot, meet kettle.

12:34 – It took twelve minutes for me to realize the theme of this week’s podcast – let’s piss off Big D!  Shortly thereafter, Sparty makes a seamless (NOT!) transition into college football…

14:18 – I need to isolate this audio of Sparty barking.  I feel like Pat would enjoy using this clip if Michigan State and UCONN meet up in the NCAA Tournament in March…

16:30 – There’s a brewing QB controversy in Michigan State between a quarterback and a FG holder.  Or at least that’s the rumor I’m starting today.  You can take it to the bank!

17:40 – Apparently Sparty & Friends has a Twitter page.  I was unaware of this.  Hey, I learned something new today!

19:00 – Sparty: “We’re well aware that nobody likes Philadelphia…”  Amen.

21:30 – For the record, this was recorded Tuesday night, a full twelve hours before Sal Palantonio’s Sportscenter report that Andy Reid is losing power over his team on Wednesday morning…

23:50 – Here’s something I bet you never expected to hear – a Giants’ fan praising Andy Reid.  Sincerely.  And then a defense/teardown of Brad Childress…

32:30 – D: The Sidney Rice situation “…is really the only way you could find fault with Brad Childress right now…” I wonder if the Minnesota Fans that populate these pages might disagree…

35:35 – Listen as Sparty attempts to school me in the Patriots’ woes from the immediate port-Weis/Crennel era. You’ll notice that for the most part I just go silent and give him just enough rope…

41:30 – As Sparty is called away by Lil’ Sparty for some fatherly duties, Lefty & I discuss the Patriots’ upcoming draft strategy, as well as NFL raft strategies in general.  Shortly thereafter, Lil’ Sparty weighs in with his thoughts on the Patriots’ obsessive need to stockpile draft picks.

47:00 – And a sweet transition from the NFL Draft to just how much Jake Locker has cost himself in the past twelve months.  From possible #1 overall draft pick in last year’s class to maybe not going in the first round in 2011… yikes.  Then a nice move to this week’s Heisman update.

52:00 – A quick discussion on the worthiness of Heisman candidates from “dark horse” schools like Stanford and Boise St.

55:20 – We move quickly to talking about possible National Title scenarios if Alabama or Ohio State falter.  I make mention that there’s a remote possibility of Michigan getting to the Ohio State game undefeated… yes, I’m a bit delusional.  Let me have my moment.  After about two minutes of trying to talk Boise State into the NT discussion, Sparty & Lefty have had about enough of “Potato State”

59:30 – Sparty: “We’re not going to talk about it, we know it doesn’t work, the sixteen team playoff does not work, we’re not going to talk about it…”  Then we talked about it for about five minutes.

1:06:15 – Sparty gives away one of the great married men secrets of our time… gentlemen, do not let your wives listed to this part of the podcast.  Hammer, drill, run a chainsaw – anything to make sure this 45 second stretch is not audible to anyone not wearing headphones…

1:07:20 – We finally realize that we’ve gone this long without a true tangent… don’t worry, we make up for it for the rest of the podcast…

1:07:45 – Miz, although we being to discuss the end of the baseball season for a bit here, don’t turn the podcast off just yet.  You’ll be pleasantly surprised when we praise your preseason pick of the Reds to win the NL Central…

1:13:00 – Lefty is on the record – he’s picking Tampa Bay to come out of the American League and into the World Series.  Bookmark this page so that you can either mock or praise him in a couple weeks…

1:14:30 – I had a choice to make here… I could either leave in five+ minutes of fantasy baseball talk between the three of us, or I could insert a three second comical drop-in taken completely out of context from Trey on last week’s podcast, and thereby cut the total running time down a bit as well as not subject the listeners to fantasy baseball talk.  Guess which one I went with?

1:14:35 – Fear not, the fantasy football talk stayed in.

1:16:15 – Look at Lefty giving the iTunes plug and shootout!  Nice job turning him into a company man so quickly Sparty!  I suggest you all take Lefty’s advice – download this and all future podcasts by subscribing to the Spartacast in iTunes, then listen to it on your commute or during your lunch break!  It’s almost like we knew what we were doing when we planned this…

1:16:30 – And we’re off the rails completely… after concluding the fantasy sports talk, we suddenly start talking about commute time.  I’m sure there’s a sports angle in here somewhere, but I’ll be damned if I can find one.

1:17:05 – I’m giving myself credit for the best line of this tangent… “My current commute is from the bed to the couch.”

1:17:07 – Holy hell, how did we get this far into this podcast without mentioning Braylon Edwards?  Pat… you thought you were gonna get off easily on this one?

1:20:10 – Sparty gives a perfect summary of Vernon Ghoulston as an NFL player here…

1:21:00 – We (finally) stop talking by reminding you all that Florida / Florida State is NOT a Top5 College Football rivalry game… good night everybody!

What situation? The Vikes wanted him to have surgery, Rice listened to the one doctor out of three who said rehab would work. Can’t force a guy to have surgery.

  2. Lefty & I discuss the Patriots’ upcoming draft strategy, as well as NFL raft strategies in general.

I didn’t realize 7+ months away qualified as upcoming?

    • I didn’t realize 7+ months away qualified as upcoming?

Big D has already jumped ship and given up on the season like CMFOST

  3. We (finally) stop talking by reminding you all that Florida / Florida State is NOT a Top5 College Football rivalry game… good night everybody!

    It is a top 10 though…

  4. 08:30 – Cabbage, Knightro, CycleDan, Pat… you might want to skip over this part here when I start a sentence by saying “Well in fairness, I was only born in ‘81…”

You young whippersnappers. When I was your age, I had to walk two miles to school in the snow …

      Uphill both ways?

  5. It is a top 10 though…

I would actually put it number 4:
    1. Alabama v Auburn
    2. Mich v OSU
    3. Army v Navy
    4. FSU v Florida
    5. Red River

    • I would actually put it number 4:

      2. Mich v OSU
      3. Army v Navy
      4. FSU v Florida
      5. Red River

Cal – Stanford is bigger than FSU – Florida

    • I would actually put it number 4:1. Alabama v Auburn2. Mich v OSU3. Army v Navy4. FSU v Florida5. Red River  (Quote)

Army-Navy is not relevant until either one of them gets into the top 25.

  6. I would actually put it number 4:
    1. Alabama v Auburn
    2. Mich v OSU
    3. Army v Navy
    4. FSU v Florida

Waiting for spencer to see this and hyperventitlate.
