Sparty and Friends Movieology Champion: A Tribute

April 6, 2009
By

sparty and friends movieologyAfter 1,460 votes were counted, and recounted…we here at SpartyandFriends are proud to announce that Caddyshack is your  2009 Movieology champion, taking down Major League. We thank all of you that joined in, it was definitely fun.

Caddyshack after a somewhat easy run, took down the dreadful Remember the Titans to claims their spot in the Finals and demolished Major League, a great movie, but one which had no real reason for being there.

What better way to honor your winner but with some awesomely cool facts about the movie?

The roles of the big three in the movie (Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Bill Murray) were supposed to be cameos and nothing else. This changed after filming began and Harold Ramis felt he was wasting the improvisational skills the three actors/comedians possessed.sf-sports-movies-bracket_update-for-finals

The movie was inspired by writer and co-star Brian Doyle-Murray’s (Bill Murray’s brother) memories working as a caddy at the Indian Hill Golf Club in Winnetka, Illinois. He based most of the characters on real life people he knew while on the job. Doyle-Murray played the role of Lou the head caddy.

The now-legendary scene involving a Baby Ruth candy bar being thrown into the swimming pool was based on a real-life incident at Doyle-Murray’s high school. I could not provide the full clip because there is some nudity, but the ending is the best part anyways. “It’s no big deal.”

Bill Murray’s famous “Cinderella story” scene was improvised based on two lines of stage direction. Ramis basically gave him direction to act as a kid announcing his own imaginary golf moment. Murray just took it from there using a hoe to take out some flowers.

The gopher sounds were the same sounds used by Flipper the dolphin in the 60′s television show of the same name…

The famous scene that begins when Ty Webb’s golf ball crashes into Carl Spackler’s house was not in the original script. Harold Ramis added it after realizing that two of his biggest stars, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray did not have a scene together. It was well known that the two actors didn’t like each other, and had a hard time getting along. They were able to put their differences aside and wrote the idea for the scene together. It was almost entirely improvised.

During the filming final scene of the movie (Spackler’s attempt to blow up the gopher) a pilot flying witnessed one of the explosions and reported a downed plane to the FAA. Note: I couldn’t find a clip of the original scene, so I included the Tiger Woods commercial, which is pretty accurate, and equally as hilarious.

Some questioned out finals, and understandably so, however Caddyshack was  in AFI’s Top 10 Sports movies at #7. Considering at the time of the release the critics’ reviews were so terrible that people feared for the success of the film, the movie did alright for itself.

btw, major league won the popular vote 1529-1426…but that’s mainly due to a huge turnout for the baseball bracket on the first day

john- he sent an email to everyone saying that he wasn’t happy with his picks due to the autopick. he listed players that he wants from our teams and says everyone is available on his team. that’s fine. but instead of making offers to us, he told us all that he is awaiting all of our offers. he said that we should hurry up.

I said people might want to hurry up because I was offering my players to everyone in the league. It is quite possible that more than one guy wants CC or something.

How about this… since you now know what guys on your respective teams I want, why don’t you just email me the guys on my team that you are interested in and which guys on the list I sent you, you would consider trading.

I’ll make up the actual trades if you want.
